Getting ready for GCSEs

Pathway to Higher Education

GCSEs are studied over two to three years in secondary school and play a key role in determining each student’s readiness and eligibility for further study and higher education.

Choosing Subjects Wisely

Students have the freedom to select their GCSE subjects, so it’s important to encourage your child to choose options that reflect both their strengths and their interests beyond English, Maths, and Science.

Making the Right Choice

When selecting GCSE subjects, encourage your child to balance what they excel in with what they genuinely enjoy, alongside the core subjects of English, Maths, and Science.

FAQS

It’s best for students to begin preparing around 6 to 9 months in advance, usually at the start of the academic year in which they will sit the exams. Early preparation helps build confidence and ensures steady progress across all subjects.

While subjects vary depending on each student’s choices, English, Maths, and Science are compulsory. Optional subjects may include a modern language, a humanities subject, or an arts or technical subject.

GCSE results are typically released in the third week of August. For example, in 2023, results day was on 24 August.

GCSEs are a key milestone in every student’s education. The subjects chosen can influence future A-level options and, ultimately, university or career pathways. Many universities and employers consider GCSE results as part of their selection process.
